race: praying
without words
April 15 began as a perfect day. For the
first time in memory, my taxes were
filed early and I was taking a few days
off — the first real break I’d had in several
months. It was a warm and sunny
day, with a cloudless sky. As I made my
way to my hometown in Massachusetts,
I drove leisurely through Rhode Island. I
took in the scenery of the back roads and
the smell of the ocean air while I listened
to the final innings of the Red Sox game
on the radio. I was jubilant as the game
concluded with another Boston win, the
home team just edging out the opposition
